Despite decades of progress, overall, the numbers are growing – and climate change is a contributing factor.
In communities where FGM is practised, droughts and economic shocks intensify the pressures on families to harm their daughters. When harvests fail and livelihoods collapse, girls are more vulnerable. They are pulled from school and cut. Then they are married early in exchange for cattle, goats, food, or cash.
At the same moment, foreign aid budgets are shrinking and women’s rights are under pressure globally.
The headwinds are real but so is the evidence that change is possible. We can scale progress quickly with the right support.

Across Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau, Somalia and beyond, frontline activists and survivor- led organisations are already delivering change with proof of impact. Community abandonment pledges. Trusted local media campaigns. Peer networks that reach girls before the harm is done. Laws and policies passed. Cultural norms rewritten.
Impact studies of frontline-led strategies show declining support for FGM of up to 94 percent in some communities.
Local organising models can be scaled with the right resources. We must support them.
THE FUND
The first-of-its-kind catalytic fund
to end FGM in a generation
Wallace Global Fund is committing over $10 million to launch a catalytic new pooled fund focused on ending FGM. The End FGM Global Action Fund is the largest known philanthropic commitment backing frontline efforts to end FGM. It will unite philanthropic, corporate, and bilateral capital and move these resources directly to locally-led solutions at scale. It is engaging survivors, frontline activists, movement leaders, and technical experts in shaping its vision and architecture and will be formally launched in Kenya this September.
