Report of Media Outreach and school sensitization on Ending FGM in Osun State, in Commemoration of the 2021 International Day of the Girl with the theme: "DIGITAL GENERATION, OUR GENERATION.”
To commemorate the International Day of the Girl, the campaign was taken to Rave (91.7) in Osun state to discuss the issues affecting the girl child, relating it to this year’s theme “Digital generation. Our generation”.
The International Day of the Girl is commemorated every October, 11 as declared by the United Nations. For 2021, the theme for the year is “Digital generation. Our generation.”
With support from the Global Media Campaign to end FGM on International Day of the Girl, we held a presser with Radio Togotane 88.3FM together with 20 school-going girls drawn from Kuria – Migori County, who were able to air out challenges affecting them including harmful cultural practices such as FGM.
During the IDG celebrations, I held a talk show on Sidai TV. The show was live and interactive with the community having a chance to call and ask questions to the panelists.
The project involved Me (Chief of Moran), an uncut girl and a survivor of FGM. I being the chief of Moran, stand firmly to protect the rights of girls and women in my community.
Our media project funded by Global Media Campaign (GMC) was directed at engaging the Kalenjin communities living in Trans-Nzoia, Bungoma, West Pokot, and Uasin Gishu counties and also Eastern parts of Uganda bordering Kenya. These communities are Sabaots, Pokots, Nandies, and Sebei’s of Uganda.
Through our project, we decided to celebrate and support our school-going girls as we sensitize and advocate for their rights.
Like any other year, during the school term breaks many girls are at risk of going through the cut, especially in Jarirot Village. We have highlighted the plight of children, taking count of the progress made in enabling the various children's rights.
This session sought to break down the reasons why politicians don’t speak about FGM, how to begin discussions on the topic with local/regional/national elected officials and how to rally more politicians to EndFGM media campaigns. The session also kickstarts a #PoliticiansToEndFGM campaign in the media.
