FGM survivors and Uncut girls unite on Radio to share the message ‘FGM Must End’ : Team Western Area Rural, Sierra Leone

The Global Media Campaign (GMC) in a bid to reach out to more communities with the Western Area. Funds were dished out to Team Western Area Rural for a media a campaign as schools across this area were closed. We aimed to educate the public on the harmful effects FGM that continue to effect our women and girls in Sierra Leone and elsewhere.

The funds were used in the following ways:

Radio Discussion Programme was hosted at Radio Lion Mountain one of the most listing to community radio stations located in the district. In order to reach to people we used simulcasts on Star Radio 103.5 FM in Freetown which cover the rest of the country and Radio Democracy 98.1 FM in Western Urban.

The topic: The importance of summer schools when schools are closed.

The audience based as ever where lawmakers, uncut women, teacher, policy makers, sowies and parents for the set people to remind our listeners of the evil and health implications glued in cutting our women and girls in the society.

We invited an uncut lady, a teacher and a FGM victim to radio to discuss on we can end FGM by 2030.In a bid to discuss on the importance of the above topic the opportunity was also given to our audience to contribute through a text messages.

Who were our guests?

Our panelists were 17 years old Saffie Conteh an uncut girl, Margreat Kamara FGM victim and Daniel Yambasu a Teacher at the District Community primary School in Waterloo.

The uncut girl role is to educate her peers, community stakeholders and parents on the importance of summer schools which will improve the lives of the children instead of going through FGM or (Bondo).

The FGM survivor gave firsthand account of what she experiences in the Bondo bush an growing up and encourages parents and girls not put their girl child to FGM.

Ruth Harley

Ruth Harley is working with GMC as a Website News Editor, compiling stories written by End FGM campaigners working with the Global Media Campaign to End FGM across Africa. Alongside this work, she is running The Women’s Vinyl Project which empowers women and girls through singing and music and is helping to end FGM.
