Radio Conversations with a Youth leader and Doctor on ending FGM, Wajir County, Kenya

By Ali Mohammed,

We used our campaign to sensitize the community on upholding the rights of the girl child against FGM in Wajir County. This is done through the wajeer FM radio with wide coverage and going in the local Somali dialect.

The panel:

The panelist included a medical professional doctor and an FGM survivor who was a vocal youth speaker and community mobiliser. The other panelist also included the FGM activist who shared a wide range of information including the progress in the fight against FGM, the government laws on FGM, etc.

Radio reach:

Wajir Community Radio has the widest coverage of listeners approximately 250,000 in NEP Counties.

Our success:

Photo 1: neyrus has been spearheading sensitization campaigns against harmful practices, especially against girls at wajeer FM.
Photo 2: Community dialogue in ending FGM and gender-based violence.
Photo 3: Reform cutters displaying their business and breaking up with the tradition to keep our daughters safe from undergoing female genital mutilation FGM
Photo 4: At Wajeer community Radio Abdifatah Mohamed Medical professional is getting involved in advocacy aimed at ending FGM/GBV.

Strong messages:

The community especially the parents are ready to fight against FGM and needs support from the government to condemn the harmful practices.

Next time:

Increase the awareness through the media and bring onboard different groups to share their experience.
